In this series of stories, Ian shares the experience of his motorcycle accident in May of 2010. This will be a multi-part story sharing the entire experience with you from the accident itself, to dealing with the insurance company and repair shop...

It was a beautiful late spring day. Sunny,  90 degrees, low humidity, and not a cloud in the sky. I had a business conference to attend a couple of towns away so I decided to hop on my ’99 V Star Custom and enjoy the ride…

After spending a few hours at the conference, I decided to grab some lunch and head back to the home office for the afternoon. I razzed the security guys out at the front gate where my bike was parked for having a grill going while I was loading up the goodies I’d picked up at the show. I mounted the old steel horse and hit the road. Being such a nice day, and not feeling rushed, I decided to take the long way home. I guess you never know where our choices will lead until it’s too late.

Instead of the highway, or even the fast route up Route 57, I decided to take a leisurely cruise up the back roads through Westfield, MA. As I was sitting at a red light, preparing to turn left near a relative’s house, I’d had a thought. My relative was injured at work a couple of years ago, and has had to endure a great deal of pain and discomfort, but had recently received a settlement from the insurance company. I’d been thinking “man, it would be nice to have a lump of money fall into my lap like that…” This was a thought I would soon learn to regret.

I was a mere three, perhaps three and a half miles from home when I turned left on to City View Road, a nice windy, though narrow road that takes you out towards my house. I was cruising along behind a car at a leisurely 30 miles per hour. As I crested the hill, shortly before City View Blvd crosses City View Road, I saw a car in the opposite lane with her blinker on to turn left across our lane. What I didn’t know was that car was about to change my plans for the rest of that day…

The car ahead of me passed by the car waiting to turn, unfortunately, the stopped car decided it would be a great time to make that turn she was waiting to make. I had very little time to react. I quickly applied the brakes, starting into a side skid. The back tire was coming out from under me. I shifted my weight a little and the bike began to skid in the opposite direction. It became clear to me that there wasn’t going to be enough time to stop before hitting the SUV blocking my path and that there wasn’t sufficient room to get around her. As I saw it, I had three options, lay the bike down, hit the moving vehicle, or bail out and hit the pavement instead.

Now I’m sure you’re asking yourself “did this guy really have the time to think about this?” The answer is yes, I really did and in my mind’s eye, I considered each option carefully. Though I won’t say the whole thing happened in slow motion, I will say that time did seem to slow a little. The options I just presented were the very ones going through my mind as I approached the SUV…

Well Monty, I’ll take what’s behind door number 3. OK, I’m dating myself there a little, for those who don’t know, I’m referencing the old Lets Make A Deal game show of the 70’s and early 80’s. I decided to shift my weight forward and to hit the pavement. My thinking was I’d probably wedge the bike under her vehicle and bust my leg were I to lay it down, and I’d probably break my neck if I hit her car. I shifted my weight once more, leaning into the direction of the skid and as the bike came over, I tucked my arms and let happen what may...
