Maine HOG Rally 2009
Folks came to Millinocket, Maine from all over the country for the 2009 Maine HOG Rally and we were there.

On July 14, 2009 we saddled up and headed north on a little vacation. Our destination? Ebemee Township in Northern Maine. While there, we planned to stop in to check out the HOG Rally so we could share the experience with you...

After a couple of stops along the way, we arrived in northern Maine on Friday. Upon reviewing the list of events, it appeared as though we were just in time to cover the Golden Road Ride.

The Golden Road is a privately owned road in northern Maine originally built by the Great Northern Paper Company in the 1970's. More recently, it's been made famous by the Discovery Channel show American Loggers. It runs from the town of Millinocket on up into Canada. It's used by the loggers in the region to transport millions of dollars in timber each year, hence the name Golden Road.

The Golden Road offers amazing views of some of the most remote forests in the United States. Though this is difficult for folks outside of this area to fathom, Northern Maine still contains many unorganized territories. In other words, open forests. These aren't cities or towns, just cooridnates on a map.

Prior to this event, the Golden Road has never been open to bikes. Cars can use it much of the time, but locals are careful to encourage folks to watch out for the logging trucks. You are instructed to get out of the way as this is their road...

The riders met at the airport just outside of downtown Millinocket. There they were met by the Discovery Channel photographers, local reports, and the Pelletier family. This is the family featured on American Loggers. They were happily signing autopgraphs for any and all of the bikers present for the ride.

The riders were then greeted by a local clergyman who provided the blessing of the bikes. This was followed by the group picture which was taken from a photographer high up in a cherry picker. You'll notice in the video above a small plane landing on the airstrip just behind the group picture as it was being taken.
A short time later, the riders saddled up and hit the road. They lopped out of the airport and through downtown Millinocket on Route 11 in what was deemed the Motorcycle Parade. It was truly a sight to behold with many of the locals coming out to see the riders off.

All in all the entire weekend was deemed a huge success. There were 579 HOG members registered for the event and roughly 340 of them were present for the ride. In spite of some rain on Saturday, the locals all believed this event had a positive effect on the community bringing in much needed revenue and a positive spirit.
"The Maine HOG organizing committee, and many of the participants we spoke with indicated that this was one of the best events they've done date." says Scott Lee, a member of the New England Outdoor Center, one of the primary organizers for this year's event. "They also told us we offered some of the best food as well which we really appreciate. This provided a big boost for the local economy and many of the participants indicated they're already planning their return visits."

If you're a HOG member, and you missed this one, be sure to pencil it in for next year!
